Frequently asked questions
Is the tag really free?
Yes. Right now WhosPet is invite-only: tags are given free to people we invite, with nothing to pay. When ordering opens, your first tag will be free and you'll only pay UK postage.
How long does delivery take?
We post orders within 2 working days by Royal Mail, and most arrive 2–4 working days after that.
What's the tag made of?
It's 3D-printed from PLA, a plastic usually made from plant sugars or starch (such as sugar cane or corn) rather than oil, with a small NFC chip sealed inside. It weighs about 2 g and is under 3 cm across. PLA is still a plastic: it isn't home-compostable, so please don't put it in your garden compost.
Is the tag safe for my pet to wear?
It's designed to be small, light and smooth, but like any tag or collar accessory it isn't a toy, and it is small enough to be swallowed. Please:
• check the tag, its ring and the collar regularly, and replace the tag if it's cracked, chewed or loose;
• take it off if your pet (or another pet) chews at it, and contact your vet straight away if you think any of it has been swallowed;
• for cats, use a breakaway (quick-release) collar.
See “Using your tag safely” in our terms.
What information do I need to give up?
Just an email address to sign in, and a shipping address to receive the tag. Your phone number and home address are never printed on the tag or shown to whoever scans it.
What does a finder actually see when they scan my pet's tag?
Your pet's name, photo, breed, and any message you've added — plus a button to notify you. They never see your email, phone number, or address unless you turn on “show these details on the public tag page” in the pet profile, or you've marked the pet as lost — see below. You only see their details if they choose to share a message, location, or a way to reach them back — all entirely optional on their end.
What happens if my pet actually goes missing?
Mark them as lost from your dashboard. The scan page switches to an urgent "missing" banner, shows any allergies/medications up front, and displays whichever contact details you've filled in (phone, email, WhatsApp, address) directly to whoever scans the tag. You can also choose to show those same details all the time, from the pet profile, without marking them lost. You can print a lost-pet poster with a QR code straight from your dashboard. Mark them found again any time to turn the urgent banner back off — contact details stay visible only if you've left that profile switch on.
Do I need an app to use this?
No, on either side. You manage your pet's profile from a normal web page. Whoever finds your pet just taps the tag with their phone (NFC, works with any modern phone) or scans the QR code on the back with their camera — no app to install either way. If neither works for them, the tag also has the tag's website and code printed on it, so they can type it in by hand instead.
How is this different from a microchip?
A microchip needs a vet or shelter's scanner to read, so a finder can't act until someone takes your pet in. A WhosPet tag works instantly with any phone.
How is this different from an engraved tag?
An engraved tag has to show your phone number or address to be useful — visible to anyone, permanently. WhosPet relays a notification without exposing either.
Can I change my pet's info after I've registered the tag?
Yes — sign in and update the name, photo, breed, or message from your dashboard any time. No need to order a new tag.
What if I want to cancel an order?
Tags given by invitation are free, so there's nothing to refund: if you no longer want yours, just tell us at hello@whospet.co.uk. If you paid for an order before we switched to invite-only, the rights in our terms still apply.
Do you ship outside the UK?
Not yet — UK addresses only for now.
What if the finder doesn't want to share their location?
That's entirely their choice — location sharing is opt-in for the finder, and they can still notify you with just a message and no location at all.
Can the finder leave a way for me to contact them back?
If they want to — there's an optional "let the owner contact me back" option on the notify form where they can leave a name, phone number, and/or email. It's entirely up to them; if they skip it, you'll still get notified, just without a way to reply.
